Calendar

While most of the Flaeness use the Common Year calendar, consisting of 16 months with between one and four weeks each, the area of the Sasserine Peninsula has been isolated for so long, it has simplified their calendar to eight months with an even 42 days each. The number of days in the year and the names of the days of the week remain the same, but the overall structure of the Sasserine calendar has been simplified.

Prior to CY 362, Sasserines recognized 336 days in a standard year but the calendar is divided into two Sides of the year – the Days of Light and the Days of Night.  Sasserines believe in a vast pantheon of gods and deities, and they also believe that any given god's powers waxes and wanes throughout the year with the gods of good coming into power during the Days of Light and the gods of evil becoming more powerful during the Days of Night.

Each calendar Side is further divided into four 42-day Seasons.

The Sides and their corresponding Seasons are as follows:

Days of Light

  • Plantingday
  • Bloomday
  • Aridday
  • Reapingday

Days of Night

  • Rainday
  • Frostday
  • Darkday
  • Windday

The Half-Season

  • Quiylanday

Regent Quiylan II was convinced by the Sasserine mathmetician and astrologer Xumoht that adding a 28-day half-month to the Sasserine calendar would ensure the counting of years would match with the rest of the Flaness, so in CY 362, the good Regent extended the calendar and adjusted the year back to CY 362 (at that time Sasserine year count was at 392). This also brought the number of days in each year up to 364. In his honor, the people of Sasserine have since named this new season Quiylanday.

Each Season is marked by six 7-day weeks with the days of the week as follows:  Starday, Sunday, Moonday,  Godsday, Waterday, Earthday and Freeday.

The events of this adventure begin on Starday, the 18th day of Ariday in the Current Year of 593.
